TEACHING

Overcoming Fear

(This teaching appeared on The 700 Club following a story about a woman named Esther Green whose car was hijacked.)

What about anthrax? What about hijackers? What about terrorists with bombs? What about the things that can happen to us? We are all now vulnerable and are targets in a sense. But God puts a shield of protection around us. We dwell in the secret place of the most High and abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, "You are my rock and fortress."

I want to show you one of the Psalms of protection, the 91st Psalm.

1
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2
I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!"
3
For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper
And from the deadly pestilence.
4
He will cover you with His pinions,
And under His wings you may seek refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
5
You will not be afraid of the terror by night,
Or of the arrow that flies by day;
6
Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon.
7
A thousand may fall at your side
And ten thousand at your right hand,
But it shall not approach you.
8
You will only look on with your eyes
And see the recompense of the wicked.
9
For you have made the LORD, my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place.
10
No evil will befall you,
Nor will any plague come near your tent.
11
For He will give His angels charge concerning you,
To guard you in all your ways.
12
They will bear you up in their hands,
That you do not strike your foot against a stone.
13
You will tread upon the lion and cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you will trample down.
14
"Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.
15
"He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16
"With a long life I will satisfy him
And let him see My salvation."

No evilLadies and gentlemen, that is one of the great affirmations of faith. No evil will befall you. And remember, that's what God said. He said, "No. N-O. No evil will befall you."

Why?

You have made the Lord your refuge.

And I think this is where you start. "Because he has set his love upon me," God says, "therefore I will deliver him." No terror by day nor terror by night, nothing will befall you if you trust the Lord.

When Esther Green's car was hijacked, a calm and a peace came upon her.

Bind evilAnd the thing that can hurt you is panic. We begin to panic, and we have fear that can grip us. Jesus appeared constantly over and over to His people. And when he appeared, almost invariably He used the term "fear not, do not fear."

Fear is corrosive, and fear takes away your peace and presence of mind. Esther was calm, but somebody was asking for confusion. Friends and family were praying for her.

So as the enemy is attacking you, you pray to bind the enemy that is coming against you. And so you are binding, in this case, you bind the evil.

And God can do miraculous things as you take positive action. Tell Him you are setting your love upon Him. "Because he set his love upon me, therefore I will deliver him."

You talk about pestilence, and arrows that fly by night and terror in the daytime and nighttime and at noon. All around the clock. Whatever it is, whether it is a wasting disease or anthrax or smallpox or terrorism or car jacking or airplane hijacking. Whatever it is! "Because he has set his love upon me, therefore I will deliver him." No evil will befall you and the Lord will be your refuge.

You need to abide in the shadow of the Almighty. "Because he has set his love upon me and therefore I will deliver him." We need to set our love upon the Lord and ask for his deliverance. We need to prepare for Him to give us presence of mind and wisdom. More than anything, we should pray to bind the evil that might come upon us. Because He says, "No evil will befall you because you have set your love on Him."
.
Most of us never faced that kind of life-threatening danger Esther and her baby faced when the car was hijacked. But all of us face danger or disease or some kind of calamity at some point of our lives. It is only a matter of time. And, as Esther discovered, it is a matter of knowing where to find His help.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
—Philippians 4:13
