A Statement on Pat Robertson's Recent Comments Regarding the Legalization of Marijuana

Thank you for your comments.

Pat Robertson's recent remarks on the legalization of marijuana made on The 700 Club program have sparked national interest and debate.

Pat was particularly concerned with juvenile offenders and harsh prison sentences that turn young people into hardened criminals. He feels that such penalties, sometimes 10 years for possession of a tiny amount of marijuana, do not make any sense, especially with an already -overcrowded prison system.

As Pat said, "I believe in working with the hearts of people, and not locking them up."

He believes that it is important to find a way to bring down soaring rates of incarceration, as well as to reduce the social and financial costs. He cited faith-based rehabilitation programs as one possible solution.

While the debate continues, Pat has never condoned the use of, nor does he use, marijuana.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
—Philippians 4:13
